"I'm definitely not a photo purist. I believe that while fine art black and white and color photographs are objects of beauty they are not the only forms of photographic expression. I tend to want to alter the overall look of a photograph... paint on it, draw on it, dye it... I do just about anything I can to make a photograph look unlike a photograph. I've never been happy to look through the lens, click the shutter and print. Currently about eighty percent of my art is Polaroid manipulations. The remainder are images that have been manipulated by various techniques... sometimes it takes several techniques to reach the final product.

A little about Polaroid SX70 manipulation...

Several years ago I fell in love with the idea and with the images that could be created with 1970's inkstand photo technology.

Enter the Polaroid SX-70 folding instant camera. These cameras are long since out of production but film is still available and decent cameras can be found. The process by which most of these images were produced id widely known as "Polaroid manipulation".

Sandwiched inside the film/print is an emulation which remains soft for some time after the film has been exposed. During this time parts of the emulsion can be moved around or manipulated by applying pressure with various types of tools to create a unique "painterly" effect.

After working a while with the process I developed my own personal style and technique. The finished product is an original piece of art which is less than 4 inches square. To enlarge images I utilize a scanner to record the images in any size I choose. I print only on archival papers using archival inks. The prints are printed as "artist proof" (a/p) of usually no more than three to five signed prints and then in signed and numbered limited edition prints of no more than thirty.

I welcome questions, feedback, critiques and would be very happy to hear from you at info@russmullinsgallery.com

Many thanks for looking!"
